ITT unveils Sanitaire Gold Series membrane diffusers at WEFTEC 2010

New aerators to deliver significant energy savings to biological treatment process

New Orleans, La. – October 4, 2010 – ITT Corporation, a global leader in the transport and treatment of water and wastewater, announced the availability of its new Sanitaire Gold Series membrane diffusers at a press event today at the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Conference (WEFTEC 2010) in New Orleans. The Sanitaire Gold Series membrane diffuser has proven in tests the ability to deliver energy savings of more than 20 percent over comparable products in the marketplace. In addition to lower power consumption, the new design is easier to install, maintain and scale compared to other systems due to its modular design.

The Gold Series membrane diffuser offers high standard oxygen transfer efficiency (SOTE) and numerous other advantages over competing models proven during tests at ITT’s new state-of-the-art testing facility in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. For instance, it has half the head loss through the membrane than rival systems it was tested against, meaning less pressure to overcome when the blower starts. The combination of both a higher SOTE and a better head loss through the membrane results in a higher overall standard aeration efficiency (SAE), measured in oxygen delivered per kilowatt hour (kgO2/kWh). In ITT’s tests, this translated into energy savings of 20 percent or more.

The membrane diffuser is available in three lengths, and the Gold Series grids can be combined with grids of Silver Series disc diffusers, giving them flexibility for all basin configurations, including circular or other unusual geometries. The multiple sizes and modular design allow for greater membrane density in tank area coverage which means lower flux and more time for the oxygen to transfer when bubbles are rising – for, again, higher efficiency, according to Jan Pedersen, ITT market development manager for biological treatment.

Pedersen also underscored the climate change aspects of improved energy efficiency, pointing to a Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) report from earlier this year that noted aeration accounts for 35-65 percent of total energy consumption at a typical wastewater treatment facility. And, representing 35 percent of municipal energy use, water and wastewater facilities are the most energy intensive operations of local governments, leading to release of about 116 billion pounds of CO2 a year – as much global warming pollution as 10 million cars, reported the Natural Resources Defense Council.
"Everything you can do to get less pressure on the blowers in your system is good from the point of view of power consumption," Pedersen said. "And the Gold Series was developed to require low pressure with high aeration efficiency. That low head loss through the membrane contributes greatly to lower energy demands and costs."

Field tested for over a year, Pedersen said, the unit's latest test site is a wastewater treatment plant in Zuidhorn, Holland. The plant is run by Waterschap Noorderzijlvest – a water board in Groningen, a city southeast of Zuidhorn. As part of a program to test new solutions to reduce energy costs, the water board upgraded its conventional disc diffusers to the Gold Series in April.
Eelke de Jong, the water board's process engineer and project manager for the energy efficiency program, is very pleased with results to date from the Sanitaire Gold Series diffuser. "It clearly indicates an important reduction in the energy consumption," de Jong said, adding that he expects higher reductions and greater savings as more data is collected over a longer monitoring period.

Through its global network, ITT follows emerging customer needs and constantly improves its offerings to provide new and innovative solutions. With the new membrane diffusers, it owns the broadest product portfolio for aeration products from blowers to diffusers, including monitoring and control equipment.
